Chapter 16: Her Own Face

I looked at the roses.

They were the expensive kind, long and dark, every thorn stripped off.

He'd always liked things that couldn't hurt him.

"No," I said.

Ryland kept smiling. "Babe, think about it for one second."

"I thought about it. No."

The older doorman had stopped pretending to look at the street.

"You're upset," Ryland said, a little louder, for the canopy. "She's upset. She's had a hard week."

"I'm not upset." I said it clearly, so the doormen wouldn't have to lean. "You want to marry me so I can't testify against you. You said so. Right here."

The younger doorman made a small noise and turned it into a cough.

Ryland's smile went thin at the edges.

"Keep your voice down."

"You slept with my best friend on your birthday," I said. "You paid her with the staff's tips. You told her my login would take the blame, and you said I'd be grateful not to work."

His face went blank.

The light switch again, off.

"Who told you that?"

"Nobody told me."

He didn't understand that.

He wasn't capable of understanding that I'd been in the room.

I took the roses out of his hand.

I turned and held them out to the older doorman.

"For your wife," I said.

The doorman looked at Ryland.

Then he took the roses.

"Thank you, miss. She likes red."

Ryland leaned in close, and the investor voice was gone.

"You'll be nothing," he said. "You hear me? You were a nobody who wrote about pillows when I met you. No one in this city will ever know your name."

"Then I'll tell them," I said.

I walked to the subway with the notebook against my ribs.

Dell was on the couch when I got home, sweeping flour into a dustpan in her lap.
