Chapter 18: Keely

She picked the High Line at ten on Saturday morning.

The Saturday Ryland had wanted me at City Hall.

I didn't think that was an accident.

It was gray and windy and nearly empty up there. A few joggers. A man walking three greyhounds in matching sweaters.

Keely sat on a wooden bench above Tenth Avenue in a camel coat and sunglasses, on a day with no sun at all.

She didn't stand up to hug me this time.

"Phone," she said.

"What?"

"Your phone. Take it out. Turn it off. Put it on the bench where I can see it."

I took it out and turned it off and laid it face up between us.

She looked at it for a long time.

"And the other one," she said.

I stared at her.

"The cheap black one," Keely said. "The one the consultant carries. Put it down, Jane."

The wind came off the river and went right through my coat.

I put the black phone on the bench next to my own.

Keely took her sunglasses off.

Her eyes were red around the edges. She'd covered it well, but I'd watched her do her makeup in a hundred hotel bathrooms.
