He didn't fight me for it.
He was too surprised. Nobody had ever taken anything out of his hand in front of people.
"Good evening," I said.
It came out over the ballroom in my own voice.
"My name is Romy Cotter. Most of you read about me this month. I'm the inspector who leaked the dates."
"Miss Vickery over there is about to tell the reporters in this room that I worked inside this hotel for three weeks under a false name."
I looked at table one.
Keely had gone still with her glass halfway to her mouth.
"She's right," I said. "So let me save her the trouble."
I opened my clutch.
I took out the round tortoiseshell glasses with no prescription and put them on.
Then I dropped my voice half a tone and slowed it down.
"Good evening, Mr. Kinsella."
The line of forty went very still.
The head housekeeper's mouth opened.
The line cook said, "No," out loud, to nobody.
The night bellman just nodded, once, like a man who'd heard my real voice on a phone at seven in the morning.
"Jane," I said, in my own voice again. "Guest experience consultant. The librarian."
