Chapter 27: Back Pay
Colm didn't laugh.
"Which part of it?" he said.
"Not the deed," I said. "I don't want to own it. I don't want your name on anything for me."
"Then what?"
"I want to make it honest." I said it slowly, so I'd hear it too. "Every towel. Every check. Every door that sticks. I want it to deserve the star it just lost. With my own face. No wig."
"You want to work here."
"Not for you."
"No," he said. "You were never very good at that."
"I want to answer to the board. Not to you. If you ever cut a corner, I want to be the one who writes it down."
He held out his hand, and we shook on it in the middle of the Grand Ballroom.
The line cook whistled through his fingers.
The board chair reached us at last, breathing hard from the stairs to the stage.
"Colm," he said. "A word. Tomorrow. Nine o'clock."
"About what?"
"About whether you'll come back," the chair said. "The board would like to ask. Properly. With an apology in the minutes."
Colm looked at me.
"Say yes," I said. "You'll need someone to set the clock."
