Chapter 32: The Gold Door
Colm went very still under me.
"Name it," he said.
"We get married in the ballroom," I said. "Downstairs. Not a church, not a club, not London."
"Done."
"I'm not finished."
"Sorry."
"The staff sit in the front rows. All of them. Housekeeping, the kitchen, the laundry, the door." I put the ring on myself, on the finger with no pale line on it anymore. "The board sits at the back."
He started to laugh.
He laughed until the bed shook and one of the candles went out.
"The board chair is seventy-four," he said. "He'll have to bring his hearing aid."
"He can turn it up."
"Is that the whole condition?"
"One more thing."
"Anything."
"You learn to park."
"That," he said, "I can't promise."
We were married on the third Saturday in May, in the Grand Ballroom of the Kinsella, at four o'clock in the afternoon.
I got ready in 2001 with my mother and my sister.
