Chapter 16: The Crash
I pulled my sweater back on in the dark, and Phillip buttoned his shirt wrong and did not notice.
We reached the library in four minutes.
Augustin sat under the reading lamp with a gray folder open on his knees and his cane across the arms of the chair.
The butler stood in front of the cold fireplace, straight as a post, with his white gloves off and held in both hands.
I had never seen him without them.
"Close the door," Augustin said.
Phillip closed it.
"I had the bank send this up at nine," the old man said.
"The police report from the night of the crash. The tow yard photographs. A doctor's intake form."
He lifted the form and turned it toward the lamp.
"I have read the report every year for nine years, and I read it as I was told to."
"Tonight I read it as a man who has been lied to."
"Grandfather."
"The report says Dewitt was a passenger, thrown against the dash. It says he walked away and flagged down a car."
"That's what I was told," Phillip said.
"The form says Dewitt Stannard was treated by a private doctor at twenty minutes to three in the morning."
