Chapter 23: Vows

The cabin was exactly the size I remembered, and it smelled of cold ashes and new pine.

The new stove squatted in the corner, black and shining.

Phillip knelt in front of it feeding in kindling, easy as a man who had done it ten thousand times.

"It draws," he said, pleased and a little stunned. "Two years I had that old one, and it never drew once."

"It was your fault. You wouldn't open the flue."

"I was blind."

"You were stubborn."

He laughed, and the fire caught, and the room filled with orange.

I stood in the doorway in my coat and looked at it all.

The table under the window, where I had set down groceries.

The narrow bed with the quilt I had patched with a pair of my mother's curtains.

The nail by the door where he had hung his cane on the first day.

I had been twenty in this room and I was twenty-seven in it now.

I took off my coat, and I hung it on the nail.

He stood up from the stove with his hands black to the wrist, and his eyes were on me.

"I made a decision," I said.

"About the doctor."

"I'll do it."

He did not move.

"In January, when the group opens. One in five. One in ten the wrong way."

"Kira."

"I thought about seven years of hiding it. I thought about being the woman who took the sure thing and saw less every month."
