Chapter 8: Say It to Me

Nia's POV

Idris set his phone on the kitchen table and slid it across to me.

"Look at them in order," he said. "Then tell me what you see."

I looked.

A cabin on a dark ridge, a porch light, a black sedan under a tarp.

Seren on the porch with Owain's hand at her collar.

A silver wolf's head pin catching the light.

I swiped to the fourth picture and my sister's face, tipped up, smiling.

My chest went tight.

"Where was this?" I said.

"Owain's cabin on the ridge road. Tonight."

"She's at the motel."

"She told the whole pack she was at the motel," Idris said. "She wasn't. She was at his place, and he gave her his Beta's pin."

"That's not what that is."

"Then what is it?"

"Owain is her friend," I said. "He's always been her friend."

"That isn't an answer."

"He's the only one in this pack who stood up for her after the photo. Maybe she went there to hide. Maybe the pin is for protection."

"Nia."

"She's a Luna in a pack that was laughing at her. Of course she'd go to a friend."

"At ten at night, through the back, with the car under a tarp?"

I pushed his phone back across the table.

"You followed my sister up a mountain in the dark," I said, "and took pictures of her."

"I followed Owain."

"Why?"

"Because a man on his phone sat at the next table when Cadell was set up. And the patrol log has a hole in it on Tuesday."

"You don't have any proof."

"I know I don't." His voice was very quiet. "That's why I'm showing you, and not shouting it from the porch."

He looked at me.

His eyes were not angry.

They were the worst thing, because they were patient.
