Chapter 12: The Wind

I picked up my phone and put it in my pocket.

I did not take my eyes off the screen with my daughter on it.

"Post it," I said.

Bree's smile flickered.

"I'm sorry?"

"The lamb. Whatever you think you have. Post it." My voice was steadier than I was. "I'm thirty-one and I'm allowed to sleep with a man. What you can't post is her face. There's a court order, and a hundred thousand people heard Garner agree to it. Every time her face shows up on a page you touch, it's you who goes to a judge."

"The order is against Garner."

"Then you'd better hope he's good at lying."

I took the lamb out of the toolbox and held it against my chest.

I walked out of her apartment past a row of framed thumbnails and my own taped-over face, and I did not look back.

In the elevator, my knees finally gave out.

I leaned on the mirrored wall and pulled the phone out of my pocket.

The little red dot was still counting.

Every word of it, in her own voice, on a recording she had told me to go ahead and make.

I was in the parking garage when my screen lit up.

The account had posted.

It was a clip from a drone, silver and shaky, of a dock in the morning sun.

A tall man carried a little girl on his shoulders, her face blurred out.

A woman in a gray sweater stood beside him while he laid a hand against her cheek.

That was me, from this morning, outside the shed.

The caption said: Sadie's new man? Looks like she's moved on fast.

Two hundred thousand views already, and a long gray scroll of comments underneath.

I got into the car and drove.

By the time I reached the Port Hollis turnoff, the post had passed a million.
