Chapter 16: What the Lamb Heard

Garner went live at nine, from the end of the dock, with the gray water behind him.

He used his own account, the one with three million followers that Bree had never bothered to take.

I stood back by the shed with Elliot, out of the frame.

Poppy was at the grocery with the woman who ran it, helping to stack cans.

Garner had not shaved.

He looked into the lens, and for once he did not smile.

"My name is Garner Lowell," he said. "Most of you know me from the sign-off."

"Six weeks ago I sued my wife for custody of our daughter and for the account."

"I want to tell you why, because it isn't what you were told."

The viewer count climbed.

Forty thousand, then ninety thousand.

"In March I told someone I trusted that I didn't want custody," Garner said. "I said I wanted the channel, and that I'd say whatever it took to get it."

"I meant it when I said it. That's the truth, and I'm ashamed of it."

His voice cracked, and he let it.

"Sadie gave me everything in that courtroom to protect our daughter. She asked for nothing for herself."

"I took it. I'm giving it back the only way I can."

"The kitchen video was not mine. Someone hid a camera in our home, and I didn't know. I won't say who until I can prove it."
