Chapter 17: Pit Wall
Saturday morning Eli put on a helmet two sizes too big and drove a go-kart for the first time in his life.
It was Cade's old kart.
Amos had kept it under a tarp in the barn for thirty years.
He'd spent four nights with a wrench and a can of red paint getting it to run.
The track was a quarter-mile of asphalt behind a feed store outside Mooresville.
Eight kids in racing suits waited in the pits with their fathers, and every father had seen the news.
I stood at the fence in my father's old jacket with my arms crossed.
Cade stood at the pit wall in a plain gray sweatshirt with a headset over his ears.
A man in a ball cap walked up beside him and stuck out his hand.
"Mr. Renfro. My boy watched you win Charlotte on a tablet. Could I get a picture?"
"Not today," Cade said. "I'm busy being a pit crew."
"Sure. Sure. Of course."
The man backed away.
