Chapter 24: The Backbone
The Detroit auto show opened at nine on Thursday morning, and by ten the crowd around the center stand was six deep.
The Nine stood on a low black platform under white lights, with its doors closed and its nose pointed at the entrance.
It was lower than anything near it, and wider, and every person who walked past slowed down.
Garland's stand sat directly across the aisle.
It held a sedan with a new rear subframe mount and a banner about a safety recall.
The new chief executive stood beside it in his gray coat.
Lyman's supercar was a clay model under a cloth in the back corner, and nobody had lifted the cloth.
The chief executive crossed the aisle at ten past ten and held out his hand.
I shook it.
"The mounts are being replaced on every car, Mr. Danner," he said. "The owners are being called."
"Good."
"I'm told that's your doing."
"It was a lot of people's," I said.
A hundred feet away, a group of people in Garland jackets stood at the rope behind the stand.
There were thirty of them, from the rear line and the paint shop and the night gate.
