Chapter 4: Total Destruction

The housekeeper ran in from the kitchen. "Was that an earthquake?"

The nanny ran in behind her with the baby in her arms.

The nanny had heard the crash and fled barefoot, still holding her handbag.

They both stopped in the doorway.

Elise, always calm, stood in a field of broken glass with a blue and white vase in her hand.

"Ma'am, please stop," the housekeeper said. "Whatever it is, we can talk about it."

"You're scaring the baby," the nanny said. Her voice shook.

The baby was screaming.

Her little face was red, and both fists were clenched.

The sound drained the strength from Elise's arms.

She set the vase down and took her daughter against her chest.

"She won't take the formula," the nanny said quickly. "I think she needs you, ma'am."

Elise reached for the hem of her shirt without thinking.

Then she saw Calvin watching her.

In five years he had only seen her sharp, polished and in control. He had never seen her messy, with her hair coming loose and her shirt lifted in front of people.

Humiliation went through her.

But the baby was still crying.

Elise turned her back to him, lifted her shirt and fed her daughter.

The room went quiet.

Only the small sounds of swallowing remained.

Calvin stood where he was and looked at her back.

The housekeeper started to sweep up the glass in silence.

The nanny came close and spoke softly. "You've had it so hard, ma'am. You pushed through half a month of pain before your milk came in."

"Since she started nursing, she gets stronger every day. Look how round her face is now."

Elise said nothing.

Some part of her was still waiting. She was cold and disappointed to the bone, and she waited anyway for something from behind her.

Footsteps came closer.

Calvin stepped around to face her. He looked at her, then at the baby, who was still feeding.

When the baby let go, Elise pulled her shirt down.
