Chapter 11: The Letter

Grandma's cane came down across the table.

It hit the edge of the china plate hard enough to ring, and Mom's hand stopped six inches from the envelope.

"Sit, Diane."

"That letter is private family property."

"It has Chloe's name on it. Sit."

Mom sat.

Her face had gone the color of her pink suit.

I held the envelope against my chest, and my fingers were cold.

I thought about not opening it.

Then I saw Dad watching me.

He had the stillness of a man counting exits.

I slid my thumb under the flap.

The page inside was a single sheet of lined paper, folded in thirds.

The handwriting was blocky and slanted, the writing of a man who had signed a thousand invoices.

I took a breath.

"Dear Chloe," I read.

My voice came out strange, so I started again.

"Dear Chloe. If you're reading this, you are eighteen, and I am sorry I could not be there to see it."

"You are nine as I write this, and you already carry the laundry basket up the stairs for everybody."

"I have watched how this house works. Things go to the ones who ask loudest."

"You never ask. That is exactly why I am leaving this to you and not to the family."

"The money is yours. It is not for your brother's plans or your sister's lessons or the roof."

"If anyone tells you it is for the family, they are wrong, and they know they are wrong."

"Spend it on leaving, if you have to. Spend it on a place of your own."

"You are the best thing in that house, and I never told you."

"Happy birthday, kiddo. Grandpa."

I stopped reading.

Nobody at the table said anything.

I looked down at the page, and the writing swam, and a tear dropped onto the word kiddo and made the ink bloom.
