The taxi driver took one look at me and ran two red lights on the Strand.
Benedict sat in the back with his arm around me, timing contractions on his watch.
"Four minutes," he said. "Three and a half. Who taught you to do that?"
"Do what?"
"Go into labor in a theater."
"You hate theaters."
"I hate this one specifically."
Brody sat in the front with my hospital bag on his knees, phoning Gran.
"She says don't push in the cab," Brody reported. "She says she's coming in the dog car."
The hospital by London Bridge took me straight up.
A midwife with tight gray curls looked at my notes and then at Benedict.
"Dad?"
"No," Benedict said.
"Yes," I said, at the same time, and gripped his hand so hard he winced.
The midwife looked between us.
"Fine," she said. "Whoever you are, you're on the left. Don't faint."
"I've never fainted."
"Everyone says that."
Brody was sent to the corridor.
He sat there all night on a plastic chair with the hospital bag on his knees, the way I'd sat in the clerk's office.
