Chapter 23: The Plea

Southwark Crown Court was a brown building by the river.

I went on a cold Monday in March with June asleep in her pram and Benedict pushing it.

The three women were waiting on the steps.

The woman from Croydon had her son on her hip. He was six months old and chewing her scarf.

The nurse had brought six more women.

"From other episodes," she said. "We found each other online."

There were eleven of us by the time we went through security.

We filled the whole front row of the public gallery.

Kenzie came up into the dock at ten past ten.

No ring light. No cream blazer. A plain gray jumper and her hair pulled back.

She looked smaller without a phone in her hand.

The first thing she did was look for a camera.

There wasn't one. There aren't any, in an English court.

She looked at the gallery instead.

She saw the eleven of us.

She saw me.

Her face did something I'd never seen it do. It didn't know which way to go.

The clerk stood up and read the charges.

Selling an unsafe food. Selling a prescription drug without a license. Fraud against the buyers of BrideGlow Gold.
