Chapter 10: Cesare Comes Alone

"Play it again," I said.

Dario played it again.

"Honey, who are you talking to," said the sweet voice, and the click came, and the room stayed silent.

Ruggero was still looking at the phone.

"Don't erase it," he said. "Don't back it up to anything she can reach. Put it somewhere that isn't the house."

"It's the only copy," Dario said.

"Then it's the only thing in the city worth keeping."

Someone hit the door of the suite with the flat of a hand.

Not a knock.

Dario went white and shoved the phone into my hand, and I pushed it into the pocket of the robe.

Ruggero opened the door.

Cesare stood in the corridor in last night's tuxedo, with his tie gone and his eyes red.

He looked at Ruggero's shirt, then past him at me in a hotel robe, then at the blood on the towel on the table.

"Where is he?" he said.

"Cesare," I said.

"Where is my brother?"

Dario stepped out from behind the sofa with the butterfly strip over his eyebrow.

"I'm here."

Cesare crossed the room in three steps and took his chin in one hand, turning his face to the lamp.

"Who did this?"

"Her driver."

"Bianca's driver?" My son's voice went flat. "Why?"

"Because I took Dad's phone out of the study."

Cesare let go of him.

He turned and looked at me for what felt like a very long time.

"You brought him here."

"He came himself. He was bleeding. I let him in."

"You told him to take it."

"I didn't tell him anything."

"I told you to stay in the house," Cesare said, and his voice rose. "I told you to stay where I could see you. And last night you walked into a coat room with that man in front of half the city. Now my brother shows up in your bedroom with his face split open."
