Chapter 16: Kowalski Signs
The man in the black coat was the funeral director from next door.
He stood on the Bruce Street sidewalk at ten the next morning with his hands folded in front of him, looking at my father's shop.
My father stood beside him with his Thermos in both hands, looking entirely innocent.
"Miss Kowalski," the funeral director said. "Forgive me. I'm told you can do gold."
"I can."
"My front door has had the same lettering since 1974. The gold went green, and then it went brown, and last month a family stood in front of it and one of them asked if we were still open."
"I'm sorry."
"I am not. It has given me a reason." He took a folded Sentinel clipping out of his coat and unfolded it on his palm. "This is your work, I believe. The window."
It was the photograph, the empty glass between THE and ROOM.
"You removed an entire name in four minutes with no cracks and no ghost of the letters," he said. "My door glass has been cracked since Eisenhower. I would like someone to be that careful with it."
