The clinic ended at noon.
I sent the kids home with juice boxes and sunburned noses, and I told Maisie to take the folder and lock it in the office safe.
I did not look inside it again.
I walked down the yard to the Rosalind.
Kellen was alone under the tarp with a bucket of epoxy and a caulking knife.
He didn't stand when I came.
"Francine ran," he said. "I heard."
"She dropped a marriage certificate."
"Of course she did."
"You're not going to say anything else?"
"I've said it all." He wiped his hands on a rag. "I'm not going to say it again so it sounds better."
"Then I will."
I climbed up on the bottom rung of the ladder, so we were eye to eye.
"I think I could forgive you," I said. "That's what scares me."
