"Human," I said.
"Mortal," said Roake. "A body that ages and eats and sleeps and can be touched without a flood."
He walked closer through the water, holding the syringe up.
Behind him the four guards crept back in through the side door.
None of them looked at Goldie.
"You've spent seventy years being afraid of your own family," Roake said to Ambrose. "I'm offering you a way out."
"At what price?" Ambrose said.
His voice was rough, and he hung on my shoulder.
"The smallest price in the world. Your signature."
"On what?"
"A transfer of guardianship. Your brother and sister go into retirement, comfortably."
He tipped the syringe so it caught the light.
"You take the serum, and you walk out a man, with a pension and a young wife."
"With me," I said.
"With you, if you'd like. You'd be very happy, Miss Garrick."
