Chapter 18: Fifth Avenue

"Seventy years," Goldie said, "and the first thing I do in New York is flood a sidewalk."

She stood on the curb of Fifth Avenue in a blue silk gown that had already soaked through three layers of her coat.

The sidewalk around her feet was a small shining lake.

A man in a business suit stepped around it without looking up from his phone.

"Nobody's staring," I said. "That's the best part. This city has seen worse."

"I was going to wear the pink one," said Goldie. "The pink one doesn't drip."

"Nothing drips on your pink one because you've never put it on."

Behind her, Jasper was climbing out of the town car with forty pairs of sunglasses pushed up in his hair.

He had picked the gold ones, and his eyes were blinking on his knuckles beneath a pair of black leather gloves.

"I can see everyone's breakfast," he whispered. "I can see what that man is telling his mother. Winnie, it's a lot."
