Chapter 19: The Board
I did what I always do when a machine stops working.
I scolded it.
"Mr. Roake," I told the little steel speaker, "you have a trustee in the lobby and a camera in this car."
"You also have a man here whose heart is failing."
"A malfunction," said the speaker. "We'll have it repaired within the hour."
"Lie," Jasper breathed, from the corner. "It glows like a fireworks show."
"The narrow lady is at the security desk right now," I said.
"If this elevator isn't moving in one minute, I tell her you kept the heirs from a vote the deed says they must attend."
The speaker said nothing.
Then the car jerked, and the lights came on, and we rose the last eighteen floors in a smooth, offended silence.
The boardroom was a long glass room with a table the color of old teeth.
Three trustees sat at one end of it, the two wide men and the narrow woman, with their papers squared in front of them.
Roake sat at the head, in a perfect navy suit, with his hands folded.
