Chapter 10: Say It Out Loud

Rob's hand closed on my phone, and I pulled it back against my chest.

Two security guards in hospital blue came running down the ramp.

Beth was between them, with her badge in the air and her red hair coming out of its clip.

"That's him," she shouted. "The gray car! He's got my brother against the wall!"

Rob let go of my collar.

He straightened his jacket and picked up the coffees from the hood.

His face was perfectly smooth by the time the guards reached us.

"A misunderstanding," he said. "Mr. Ferren and I are both under a great deal of stress."

"He confessed," Beth said. "I have it on tape."

"A man with a grudge and a recording," Rob said, and smiled at the guards. "My father's attorneys will be happy to hear it."

He walked to the elevator without hurrying.

The doors closed on him, and he was still smiling.

Beth let out a sound I had never heard from her.

Then she threw her arms around my neck and held on so tight that my ribs hurt.

"You idiot," she said. "You complete, brilliant idiot."

She sent the file to the detective on the hit-and-run before we were back on the ninth floor.

The detective called back in four minutes.

He said it was enough to open the case on the crash ten years ago. It was not enough for a warrant on the gray car until a judge signed on Monday.

"That's six days," Beth said, when she hung up. "He has six days to run."

"Then we make sure he doesn't get them."

"How?"

"I'll tell you after I talk to Callie."

I went into room 912 alone.
