Chapter 4: A Key She Never Gave
"How did you get in?" I said.
Rob held up the keys so I could see the silver tag.
"Callie gave me this years ago. For emergencies."
"She never gave you a key."
"She did. You can ask her." He smiled, patient and sorry. "Miles, I know how this looks. I only came for her things. The nurse says she'll be there a week."
Beth stepped in front of me with her arms crossed.
"You can tell the nurse to call me. I'm a nurse. I'll bring her things."
"Of course," Rob said. "I only thought it would be easier for you both."
He walked past us into the apartment.
He did not ask which door was the bedroom.
He went straight down the hall, opened the third drawer of her dresser, and took out her pajamas.
I followed him and stood in the bedroom doorway.
He moved around our bed with the easy steps of a man who had been in the room before.
He took her blue robe from the hook behind the door.
He took the green toothbrush from the bathroom cup and put it in a plastic bag.
"She likes the soft ones," he said. "She won't use a hospital toothbrush."
"I know what kind she likes."
"I'm sure you do." He said it kindly.
Then his eyes went past me to the floor of the living room.
Two hundred and fourteen wills lay in rows on the rug.
"I see you found them," he said.
His voice did not change.
"Don't touch them," Beth said.
"I won't. They're hers." He turned back to me. "Miles, I'd like to explain, if you'll let me. It's not what you think."
