Chapter 8: The Gray Car

Miles's POV

Rob came out of room 912 holding a clipboard against his chest.

He closed the door behind him, and the guard stepped aside for him without a word.

Bert was gone. Beth was still at the end of the hall, with her phone down by her thigh, recording.

"Miles," Rob said. "She's resting. Let's give her ten minutes."

"Where's my ring?"

I had not meant to ask it that way.

He tilted his head, and then he reached into his jacket and brought out a small black box.

"You dropped this at the apartment," he said. "I found it by the closet. It's a lovely ring."

He put it in my open hand.

The box was warm from his pocket.

"Thank you for returning it," I said.

I pulled out my phone, tapped the screen, and slid it into my shirt pocket with the microphone facing out.

"Can we talk?" I said. "Somewhere without nurses?"

"Of course."

The stairwell door was heavy and gray.

Rob held it for me, and it clanged shut behind us.

We stood on a concrete landing under a bare bulb.

I kept my hand near the pocket.

"You were at the diner this morning," I said. "You signed her will at nine-forty. At ten past ten she was in the street."

"I was at the diner," Rob said. "I left at nine-fifty. I went to the office."

"Can anyone say that?"

"My assistant. My father. Half the dealership." He leaned on the rail. "Miles, I understand why you're looking for someone to blame. I'd do the same. But I would never hurt Callie."
