Chapter 12: What Is Left

Troy came to my porch at ten that night, and he did not knock.

He sat down on the top step with his back to my door.

I saw him through the front window when I went to check the lock.

His shoulders were shaking.

I stood in the hall for a long while with Poppy asleep on my shoulder.

Then I opened the door and stood in the doorway, and did not step out.

"Go home, Troy."

"I don't have one." He did not turn. "Russ's house is out. I can't go to my mother's, she'll cry. I slept in the truck last night."

"You gave the truck back."

"The car, then."

He wiped his nose on his sleeve.

"I thought he was mine, Maggie. For two years I thought I was somebody's dad."

"I know."

"I'd have given him anything. I bought him a bike. I came to his games. I let you carry a baby for nine months and I didn't come to one appointment, because I thought I had a family already, and it was over there."

I said nothing.

I wanted to be sure he finished.

"I wasn't in love with her," he said. "I think I was in love with being needed. She said thank you for every plate. You never said thank you for anything."

"I said it every day."

"You said it quietly."

"I said it to a man who was looking at his phone."

He turned his head.

His face was wet and swollen, and for a second I could see the boy his mother had raised.

It did not move me, and I noticed that it did not.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I know it's late. I'm so sorry, Mags."
