Chapter 13: Seven O'Clock
The next morning I went back to the sunroom with the trust in my bag and Kendall's voice on my phone.
Preston's grandmother was already in the wing chair.
"You've decided," she said.
"I want the date."
"Which date?"
"February twenty-sixth, seven o'clock, Hawthorne House."
She set her teacup down without a sound.
"You want to marry my grandson after all that."
"No."
"Then tell me what you want."
"I want the ballroom full," I said. "I want the family in the chairs and the firm's board in the front rows. I want Preston at the altar and Kendall where he can see her."
She looked at me for a long moment.
"You want witnesses."
"I want everyone who ever laughed at her game to be sitting down when I end it."
"And what ends it?"
"Ten minutes of Kendall's own voice," I said. "And your signature, or no signature."
A smile pulled at one side of her mouth.
"My husband would have hated you," she said. "He liked people who did what they were told."
"Did you?"
"Never once."
She rang a small bell on the table, and the housekeeper came in with a manila folder.
"My lawyer's copies of the Foundation ledger," Mrs. Koehler said. "Fourteen checks, five years ago, all cashed by Kendall's mother. She signed the back of every one."
She slid the folder across.
"Invite her. She will come."
"Why would she?"
"Because she has never turned down a free lunch or a chance to watch her daughter marry into my family."
I took the folder and put it in my bag beside the trust.
"The ballroom was released," I said. "Hawthorne House let the date go."
