Kirk drove for twenty minutes without speaking.

He took the road out past the edge of town, where the streetlights stopped and the reservoir lay black on the left.

He pulled onto a gravel turnout and shut off the engine.

I waited.

"You didn't take your hands back," he said.

"What?"

"When he called you his bride. He held your hands up in front of sixty people, and you didn't take them back."

"If I'd taken them back, the plan would have been over before the soup."

"I know that." He looked at the windshield. "I'm not arguing with the plan."

"Then what are you arguing with?"

"You were with him for two years." His voice was quiet and level, and it cost him something. "You said yes to him in front of everyone you love. Some of that is still in there, Matilda. I'm not stupid, and I'm not asking you to lie about it."

I stared at him.

"You think I'm still half in love with Preston."

"I think it would be normal."

"Kirk."

"I think I'm the one you grabbed in the hallway," he said, "and I'd rather know it now."

I laughed.

I couldn't help it, and it came out cracked.

He turned his head, hurt.

"No, listen." I put my hand flat on his chest. "I was in love with being picked. That's the truth. Nobody had ever picked me over Kendall, and then a man did, and I thought it meant I was worth choosing."

"You are worth choosing."

"Preston never did choose me. He chose a name on his grandmother's list." My voice shook. "He kissed my cheek today and I stood there and I thought, I wonder if Kirk has his hands in his pockets."

His mouth moved.
