Chapter 21: The Night Before

The dress hung on the back of my bedroom door in a plastic bag.

It was plain white crepe with long sleeves, bought at a department store on a Tuesday, and the first thing I had ever picked out without anyone's opinion.

Kirk sat on the edge of my bed looking at it.

"That's the dress," he said.

"That's the dress."

"It's not what I expected."

"What did you expect?"

"Something with a train, and a lot of people crying."

"There will be a lot of people crying," I said. "None of them will be me."

It was the twenty-fifth of February, and the whole day had gone by in errands and phone calls.

The florist had called twice.

Gwen had come over with a clipboard and cried in my kitchen, and then stopped, and said that if I changed my mind about one single detail she would burn the building down.

Now it was ten o'clock and the apartment was finally quiet.

I walked over to the bed and stood between his knees.

He looked up at me.

"The rule," he said. "Is it over?"

"Tomorrow."

"Then tonight is nothing."

"Tonight is mine," I said. "The rule died in December. You remember."

"I remember being a very good sport about it."

"Be a good sport again."

I pushed him back onto the quilt and climbed over him.

He laughed, and then he wasn't laughing, because I had unbuttoned his shirt and put my mouth on his throat.

"I want to take my time," I said.

"You've never taken your time."

"I'm starting."

I kissed down his chest and over the ridge of the scar, slowly, and felt his stomach go tight under my lips.
