Chapter 9: The Koehler House

The Koehler house stood at the end of a long drive lined with bare maple trees.

I had been there four times.

Each time Preston had held my hand on the steps and told me his grandmother was harmless.

On Monday I walked up them alone.

A housekeeper let me in and took me through to a glass sunroom at the back.

Preston's grandmother sat in a wing chair with a blanket over her knees and a pot of tea beside her.

She was eighty-one, small and straight, with white hair pinned up and eyes the color of slate.

She didn't get up.

"Thank you for coming, Matilda," she said. "Sit."

I sat across from her.

"You wrote on your friends' chat that you canceled the wedding," she said. "I read it. A girl in my church group showed it to me."

"It's what happened."

"I know it is. I believe every line."

I hadn't expected that.

"You do?"

"My grandson has been lying to you for two years. I let him. That is my fault, and I won't defend it."

"Lying about what?"

She poured tea into two cups and set one in front of me.

"I'll tell you what I can, and what I can't. My husband left a document when he died. It has a clock in it. The clock runs out on the twenty-seventh of February."

"What does it count down to?"

"I'm not going to say."

"Why not?"

"Because if I say it, Preston will tell you I forced you, and he'll be partly right." She looked straight at me. "I want you to read it yourself. Ask him for the paper. Read the sixth page. Then decide with your eyes open, which is a thing nobody in my family has let you do."

I stared at her.
