Chapter 10: Five Minutes
The guests left in twos, and each of them stopped at the door to say something to me.
My coworker hugged me hard and said, "Text me when you wake up, even if it's just a period."
The tallest bridesmaid took a stack of invitations off the table and said, "I'll bring these back when you need them, or I'll burn them."
Devin's cousins went last.
The older one kept his eyes on the floor.
"I didn't know," he said. "I'm sorry. I'll tell the family what I saw."
"Thank you," I said.
When the door finally closed, my father turned the lock.
Devin was still in the hall.
He hadn't left when Lila did, and he hadn't left when the others did.
He stood outside our door with his suitcase at his feet and the gray robe over his arm, and when my father opened it to check, he looked up.
"Please," he said. "Five minutes with Ansley. Then I'll go."
My father looked at me.
"It's up to you," he said.
I walked out into the hall and pulled the door almost shut behind me.
Devin looked terrible.
His collar was open, and he hadn't shaved since Nashville.
"I made a mistake," he said.
"You made about nine."
"I made one," he said. "It got out of hand. I let it get out of hand."
"You canceled my flight on Sunday."
"I was afraid you'd say no."
"To what?"
"To letting her have the trip." He pushed a hand through his hair. "She was falling apart. I thought if you saw it as a game, you wouldn't take it personally."
"You typed in the number."
