Chapter 17: Tampa

Darek's POV

I didn't tell Ansley I was flying to Tampa.

That was the first thing I did behind her back, and I told myself it was because she had enough on her plate.

The real reason was simpler.

If I told her, she would ask me what I wanted from the trip, and I didn't want to say it out loud.

Lila's aunt lived in a pale yellow house with a screened porch and a lemon tree in the yard.

Lila was on the porch with a laptop, in a sundress, barefoot on the tile.

She looked up and didn't seem surprised.

"You've become a regular," she said.

"I'm here about the post."

"Who told you?"

"Somebody who got a preview."

"The bridesmaid." She shut the laptop halfway. "I knew she'd run to Ansley. She's never been able to hold a secret more than a day."

"You've got screenshots of Ansley joking."

"I've got a year of them." Lila's voice stayed easy. "Take him, he's yours. You two deserve each other. She said it more than once, Darek, in writing. Everyone will see she was happy to share."

"She was joking with a friend who was lying to her."

"A jury of strangers won't read it that way."

"It isn't a jury."

"It's the internet." She smiled. "Same thing."

I sat down in the porch chair across from her.

The lemon tree dropped a lemon in the grass, and neither of us moved.

"I have something to tell you," I said. "Devin gave me the keys to the game on Saturday night."
