Chapter 10: Name Your Number

Levi's POV

On Sunday night someone knocked on the door of our apartment.

I had stopped sleeping there, but I had come back for my work shoes.

I looked through the peephole.

Lydia stood in the hall in jeans and a coat, with her hair tied back and her face set.

I opened the door the width of my shoulders.

"You can't come in," I said.

"I know."

"Then say it from there."

She looked at the floor mat.

Then she lifted her eyes.

"I read the paper," she said. "Your grandmother made me. There's a note on it from the triage nurse. It says you were there all night."

"It says I was there all night because I was there all night."

"I know. I know that now."

I waited.

I think she expected me to say something kind.

I had a lot of kind things in me, and all of them were stacked behind the wall where I had put them on Saturday.

"What do you want, Lydia?"

"I want to find out who was in that picture."

"That's a good start."

"I want to ask you what you think."

"I think somebody used my name," I said. "I think they used a company card that ends in 4471, and they paid for a room on a high floor with a lake view. I think a woman made the call. And I think your father's company gave her the card."

She flinched.

"Dad's company has hundreds of cards."

"Then it's a short list," I said. "Ask him who held that one."

"He'd tell me if he knew."

"Would he?"

Her lips parted.

She closed them again.

She had never once spoken against her father in front of me, in ten years, and I could see her trying now to find the place where the words lived.

"There are a few things I need you to understand," I said.
