Chapter 19: What He Sold

Brady came on Friday, on foot, from the bus stop at the end of the street.

I watched him through the front window as he walked up the sidewalk in the cold with an envelope in his hand.

His truck was not in the driveway behind him, and neither was his father's car.

I opened the door but stayed behind the storm door, and he stopped on the second step.

"I won't come in," he said. "I'll say it here."

"Say it."

"I took Kylie to Superior Trust yesterday morning. We sat across from a woman at a desk and told her what we did."

He said it flatly, in sentences he had clearly practiced.

"She gave us a form. The line is closed, and your name is off it. The bank says you owe nothing."

He held the envelope out, and I opened the storm door just far enough to take it.

Inside was a letter on bank paper with a zero printed at the bottom.

"How?" I said. "It was thirty-six thousand."

"Thirty-six thousand eight hundred and twelve. I sold the truck."

I looked at the empty driveway again.

"Twenty-two thousand four hundred," Brady said. "The rest came out of my retirement account. The penalty was eleven hundred. I paid that too."

"You sell heating systems. You need a truck."

"I know. I'm borrowing my father's until I can get another."

He stood there with his hands empty and did not say it was a sacrifice.

That was new, too.

"Where are you staying?" I asked.

"With my dad. He moved out on Christmas night. He's got a two-bedroom over the hardware store in Two Harbors, and I'm on the couch."
