Chapter 10: Nothing Happened

Jada's POV

I took the phone out of his hand and read the message myself.

Then I read it again.

"It's the same drug," Evan said. "The same as mine."

"I know."

"So we were both..."

"I know, Evan."

I sat up in the bed with the sheet held to my chest, and I couldn't make my hands stop shaking.

It was in black and white now, in a lab's cold language.

Somebody had put a sleeping drug in my wine, and it had been in my hair for six days.

Evan sat up beside me and didn't touch me.

"We're going down to security," he said. "Now."

"It's four in the morning."

"The hotel doesn't sleep. Neither do I."

We dressed in the dark, and we didn't say a word in the elevator.

The head of security was a woman in her fifties with cropped gray hair and a headset around her neck.

She looked at Evan, at me, and at the clock on the wall, and she kept all of that off her face.

"Mr. Brodsky."

"The camera on twenty-two was wiped. I want everything else we have from that night."

"Sir, the floor system is gone. The night manager has already told you."

"What about the suites?"

She went still.

"The family suite has one camera, over the foyer door," she said slowly.
