Chapter 22: Clear Heads
Jada's POV
Evan stood up out of the armchair, and he looked ridiculous and enormous and terrified.
Then he went down on one knee on the carpet, with the ring held up between us in a hand that would not stay still.
"Jada Keane," he said.
"Evan Brodsky."
"Don't. I'm trying to do this properly."
"I'm sorry." I pressed my lips together. "Go on."
He swallowed.
"I woke up on a morning I couldn't remember, and I thought I'd taken something from you," he said. "I wrote a number on a piece of paper. It was the worst thing I've ever done."
"I know."
"You tore it in half and walked out with your head up, and that's when I started to love you. I just didn't know it for a week."
My eyes burned.
"I can't give you back the first day," he said. "I can give you every day after it. I can give you a door of your own and a laundromat I'll learn to love. I can give you the truth, always, and a stove that I know how to turn on."
I laughed through tears.
"Will you marry me?" he said. "No pianist. No photographer. Just us, with clear heads."
"Yes," I said.
It was out before he had finished the last word.
"Yes. Yes, Evan, of course yes."
His face crumpled and opened at once.
He slid the ring on my finger with a trembling hand, and it fit.
It was a little loose on the knuckle, and I knew he'd guessed the size from one of my rings, and I loved him so much I couldn't speak.
I took his face in both hands and kissed him.
