Chapter 19: Presenting a Mate

Roark's POV

I had meant to go alone.

I told Winona so in the yard at noon, with the truck loaded, and she gave me a flat look.

"You decided for me once in a doorway," she said. "Try it again and see what happens."

I let her get in.

We drove four hours down the valley with the radio off. At the Ironwood line, she put her hand on my knee and kept it there.

The hall stood at the end of the main street, a long log building under a sky where the full moon was already rising.

I had walked through those doors every month of my life.

That night the whole pack was inside. Two hundred people stood in ranks along the walls, men on the left and women on the right, as they stood for every reading.

At the far end sat my father's chair, raised on a platform. Behind it, on the wall, hung the glass case.

Inside it lay the writ, yellow, with the old council's red seals pressed along its edge.

Teddy stood next to the chair with a hunter at each shoulder. He saw me and didn't smile. He gave one small nod.

Every head turned as we came in.

I took Winona's hand, and we walked the length of the hall.

It is the custom here. An heir brings his mate before the pack, and she walks beside him, and the pack looks.

I felt two hundred noses lift.

I felt the room change.

It started as a murmur at the back, then someone said "bear," and it ran down the walls from mouth to mouth.
