Chapter 18: Winona's Birthday
Winona's cake was an ice cream cake from a gas station, and it was frozen solid.
Class had ended at midnight.
The eight of us stood around the long table in Meeting Room 2, under the lit lamp wall, with paper plates and plastic forks.
One of the bakery workers had brought balloons.
The other had brought a single candle shaped like a six and another shaped like a four.
"Sixty-four," Winona said, with her hands on her hips. "God help us all."
"Happy birthday," said everyone, and I put my arm around her.
She smelled like peppermint and wool.
"Where's your inspector?" she whispered.
"Not invited."
"Good. He'd inspect the frosting."
Anselm stood at the end of the table, a little apart, holding a plastic knife.
He had said nothing to me since I came in except hello.
Under the table, since the start of the party, the back of his hand had rested against the back of mine.
Neither of us had looked down.
