Chapter 24: Held
Beth hugged him at her door for the whole length of a dog's tail-wag, and told him he was stuck with us.
By ten we were home, and he was standing in my bathroom with a toothbrush in his hand.
It was green, with soft bristles, and he held it.
"Where?" he said.
"The glass."
I had cleared the left side of the shelf on Tuesday.
He set the brush beside mine, and the two stood against each other in the glass.
He looked at them for a long time.
"That's all?" he said.
"What did you expect?"
"A speech."
"Not tonight."
I turned off the bathroom light and took his wrist, with the black band under my thumb.
In the bedroom I sat on the edge of the bed and took off my glasses.
My shoulders hurt.
My eyes felt gritty, and the week had been long, and I did not have a single order left in me.
"Hank."
"Yes."
"I'm asking."
He went very still.
"Say it properly," I said, and heard how my own voice shook.
"No. You say it. It's your rule."
I breathed in.
"Hold me. Please. I'm tired, and I want to be held."
He crossed the room in three steps and knelt in front of me.
He took my face in his scarred hands and kissed my forehead, then my mouth.
