Chapter 5: Gary

Sigrid lifted her phone to film my face.

I didn't give her anything.

"Captain," I said. "Can I have one minute?"

He looked at his watch. "One."

I took my phone out and held up the call log.

"I called the chief at 11:48 p.m. on Friday, March 20. Two hours after he told me to go home in front of three hundred people."

The captain leaned in and read it.

"I signed at the fleet office Saturday morning. The office has the time."

I swiped to the next screen.

It was a screenshot Kat had sent me that afternoon, because Kat screenshots everything.

It was Sigrid's own post, a photo of two tickets on a nightstand.

"Booked a little boat trip with my love," it said. Sunday, March 22.

"He didn't know about this boat until two days after I took the job," I said. "I didn't follow him. He followed me."

Sigrid's mouth opened.

Prescott laughed, but it came out thin.

"Captain, she's literally stalking my girlfriend's Instagram."

"She's on the internet," I said. "Everybody's stalking her Instagram. That's the point of it."

The mate on watch made a noise and turned it into a cough.

The captain put his glasses back on.

"I'll think about it," he said. "Good night, Miss Mullane."

The captain ate supper in the mess with the crew every night at five thirty.

The next night the whole day crew was there, and so were the guests, at a table the cook had set with a white cloth.

Prescott had his arm along the back of Sigrid's chair.
