Chapter 20: The Slide

"That's a lie," Trevor said again, into the microphone, in the voice he used for new members. "My wife has been under terrible strain. Her father died. She hasn't been herself."

A few people in the front rows nodded.

Four hundred phones were up, and none of them were pointed at the plaque.

I held out my hand to the foundation's tech, who stood at the side of the stage with the wireless clicker I'd been given.

She put it in my palm without a word.

"You're right, Trevor," I said. "I'm not asking anyone to take my word."

I pressed the button.

The slideshow of Colfax Strength froze, and the screen behind us went white.

The foundation had asked me for a few family photos.

I had sent them a different file.

The first one filled the screen from corner to corner, a clinic letterhead in blue ink.

The name on top was Trevor J. Colfax, and under it were the words "Sperm count: zero."

The second slide was a close-up of the line underneath, "Patient reports bilateral vasectomy, June 2016."

The room read it in silence.

I heard it go from table to table, a low rustle.

"That's forged," Trevor said. "Somebody take that down."

Nobody moved.

I clicked.

A bank slip, headed "Estate of Larrabee," for ninety thousand dollars.

I clicked again, and there was another, for sixty.

And a third, with a street address on it that I read aloud, so that nobody had to guess.
