Chapter 23: The Doctor
Jo's POV
The waiting room of Chesapeake Fertility Associates had a fish tank, a rack of magazines about babies and a receptionist who wouldn't meet my eyes.
I had been in this room twice.
Both times Trevor had sat in the chair beside me, bouncing his knee, saying, "I'll take it from here, babe. Go get a coffee."
Now Sonya sat on my left in her scrubs, with her feet up on the next chair.
Nolan sat on my right in a navy suit, holding a magazine upside down.
"Your magazine is upside down," Sonya said.
"I know."
"You're nervous."
"I'm a grown man. I'm visiting a clinic with a woman I'm sleeping with and her sister."
"Say it louder," Sonya said. "The fish didn't hear."
I laughed so hard that the receptionist looked up.
"Mrs. Colfax?" a nurse said from the door. "The doctor will see you now."
I stood.
My knees went soft, and Nolan's hand closed around mine and held it until I was steady.
"Go on," he said. "I'll be right here."
"You'll be upside down."
"I'll be here."
Sonya came in with me.
The doctor was a woman about fifty, with short gray hair and a very plain office.
She had my chart open on her desk and a thin file beside it.
"Before anything else," she said, "I owe you an apology."
I sat.
"Your results came to this office eight times," she said. "Eight letters, each one normal. Each one recommended a semen analysis for your husband. We called three times to schedule it."
