Chapter 4: Just Us Girls

Bianca had taken the window table.

She sat with her back to the street and her legs crossed, in a cream coat and pearl earrings, and she looked like an advertisement for being kind.

She stood up when I came in.

"Jo. Thank you for coming. I wasn't sure you would."

She hugged me.

She smelled like expensive roses, and I held still and let her do it.

"I'm so sorry about yesterday," she said, sitting back down. "That's not how I wanted you to find out."

"How did you want me to find out?"

"I didn't." She laughed softly, and it was the small laugh from the hotel room. "That's honest, isn't it? Order something. It's on me."

I ordered black coffee and nothing else.

Bianca waited until the waitress left.

Then she slid a white envelope across the table with one finger.

It was thick and not sealed.

"Five thousand," she said. "Take a trip. Go see your sister. Think about what you actually want."

"What I actually want?"

"Trevor and I will be finished. I'll make sure of it." Her voice was warm and reasonable. "But you should know, as one woman to another, that he isn't going to be a happy man if you stay."

"Why not?"

"Because he told me everything." She tilted her head. "Four years of trying. The tests. I think it's awful, honestly. Some women just aren't built for it, and it's cruel to hold a man to a family he can't have."
