Chapter 5: Zipped

Nolan crossed the street without hurrying and tapped twice on the van window.

The phone dropped out of sight.

Through the glass I saw a young man in a Colfax Strength polo, one of Trevor's trainers, going red to the ears.

"Tell your boss the footage is a nice shot of my good side," Nolan said.

The van pulled out so fast it ran a yellow light.

My phone buzzed before it was out of sight.

It was Trevor, and he had skipped the hello.

"Who is that man? Why were you kissing him on the street?"

I stood there with the wind in my hair and my mouth still warm.

I typed, "Nolan walked me to my car. He's been kind. Isn't that allowed?"

The three dots flickered for a full minute.

Then, "We'll talk tonight."

"I'm having dinner with Sonya," I wrote.

That wasn't true yet, so I called her and told her all of it.

"Dress," Sonya said when I'd finished. "You need a dress. I'll be at Fells Point in twenty minutes and I'm bringing a drink in my purse."

The boutique was narrow and smelled like steamed fabric.

Sonya was already there, still in her scrubs with her lanyard on, holding a gold dress up to her own chest.

"Too much?" she asked.

"For a hospital gala? Yes."

"For you? Never. Strip."

She is five foot seven with red curls and a voice that carries across an emergency room, and she had listened to the whole story with her mouth shut, which for Sonya was a medical event.

"I'm going to kill him," she'd said at the end, flatly. "I know four ways that won't leave marks."

"You can't."

"I can. I'm a nurse."

I pulled an emerald green dress off the rack and held it up.
