Chapter 16: The Relic Answers
The bronze was cold for the length of one breath.
Then the whole wall rang.
It was the note from the market, one high clear tone.
It came out of the metal and filled the Rite Hall to the rafters.
The folded wings cracked open along their seams.
Gold light poured out of every feather, and it ran across the stone and up the pillars and across the vaulted ceiling.
Four hundred faces turned bright as noon.
A woman near the front screamed, and then she was on her knees.
A man beside her followed, and a row of velvet backs went down.
I stood with my palm flat on the glowing wings and felt them answer me.
Not a door opening.
A hand taking mine.
The sigil rose off the wall and hung in the air, wider than my outstretched arms.
Gold feathers drifted down from it over the benches.
They did not fall like snow this time.
They settled on people's shoulders and went out softly.
