Chapter 22: Cleared

"You're cleared," the doctor said, and snapped my chart shut.

It was Monday, the twenty-fourth of November, six weeks to the day since a surgeon had opened me up and handed me three people.

"Cleared for what?" I said, because I wanted to hear her say it.

"Everything. Stairs. Driving. Lifting your children." She raised an eyebrow over her glasses. "Your husband."

"I didn't ask about my husband."

"No. Your face did."

I walked out to the car, where Nathan was waiting with the engine running and a thermos of tea he had made himself.

"What did she say?"

"I'm fine."

"Fine how?"

"Fine all over," I said, and watched the color climb up his neck.

He drove home at normal speed, and I counted it a personal victory that he did not speed.

At the house, the front hall was empty.

A note on the console table was written in Billie's block capitals.

"WE HAVE TAKEN THE BABIES TO DOVER. ALL THREE. DO NOT CALL. WE HAVE FOUR BOTTLES AND TWO GRANDMOTHERS. BACK TOMORROW."

Under it, in my mother's pen, was a smaller line.

"Eat something."

Nathan read it twice.

"They planned this," he said.

"They did."

"Your mother and my grandmother planned something together without arguing."

"It's a miracle, Nathan. Don't waste it."

I took the tea out of his hand and set it on the table.
