Chapter 26: The Mob

I stepped back from the crack in the door.

Ambrose's hand was already on the knob.

"Don't," I whispered. "It's quarter to twelve. If you go in there, everybody in that room breaks rule two arguing with you."

"He's telling them to hurt you."

"He's telling them to think about it. They haven't done anything."

His jaw worked in the dark.

Then he took his hand off the knob.

"In a bed by midnight," I said. "All of them. Let them go to bed scared. Scared people sleep."

He walked the green hall at five to twelve and knocked on every door, the way he used to.

I heard the five scatter to their rooms.

The next morning I went down to breakfast early, before the gong.

I wanted the kitchen to myself for ten minutes.

I didn't get it.

They were waiting in the great hall at the bottom of the stairs.

All five of them, standing in a loose half circle on the black and white marble.

No Kyle.

The father from Mirror Night stood in the middle. His eyes were red. He hadn't slept.

"Daisy," he said. "We need to talk to you."

"Okay. Let's talk in the kitchen. The cook's making pancakes."

"Here," said the braid woman.

The smaller of Kyle's old two stepped around behind me, between me and the kitchen door.

My heart started banging.

I kept my hands loose at my sides. You never let a room see you make fists.

"We're not going to hurt you," the father said fast. "Nobody wants to hurt you."
