Chapter 32: The First Life
"I didn't spill," I told her. "The baby's coming."
Twenty four-year-olds screamed with joy.
Ambrose was off the piano bench and across the fellowship hall before the scream ended.
He didn't run. He just got very large, very fast, the way he used to in Gravemoor.
"Are you hurt?"
"No. I'm wet. And I think I'm having a baby."
"Right." He took my elbow. "Right. Yes. We have a plan for this."
"We have a plan. You're the one who wrote it on the fridge."
"I can't remember a single word of it."
The director was already herding kids off the risers.
She tossed me her car keys. Ambrose caught them, because I'm not good at sports.
"You can't drive," I said. "You're legally dead."
"I've been reinstated."
"You don't have a license."
He looked at the keys in his hand.
The director came back and took them away from him and drove us herself.
Ambrose sat in the back with me and the dollhouse on the seat between us.
Mouse pressed her whole face to the attic window.
"Is it the baby?" she said. "Is it now? Is it the baby now?"
"It's the baby now, sweetheart."
The dollhouse lit up in every window at once and stayed that way the whole drive.
Penny met us at the doors of labor and delivery in navy scrubs and clogs.
She'd taken the job there in March. Labor and delivery, Columbus. Twelve minutes from my apartment.
