Chapter 4: Spare Room

Bryn did not ask permission.

She got out of the truck, looked at the boxes in the rain and began lifting them into the bed two at a time.

"The superintendent's house is mine by contract," she said. "It comes with a spare room."

"Nobody gets to lock the spare room but me."

"The general manager will say you're on club property."

"He can say it to the lease."

She took the portable crib by its rails, tilted it upright and shook the rain off.

Holt stood with Poppy on his hip and did not move.

"Bryn."

"It's four days," she said. "Then you've got a tournament and a purse and an apartment."

"Or you don't, and I'll find you a better couch."

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because your daughter is wet," Bryn said.

She lifted a box labeled KITCHEN and walked it to the truck without another word.

Poppy was leaning so far out of Holt's arms that he had to hold her by the middle.

"Bee," she said clearly, to the sky.

"That's her name for you now," Holt said.

"Is that a problem?" Bryn said over her shoulder.

"No," Holt said, and meant it more than he wanted to.

The house sat at the edge of the maintenance yard, behind a screen of live oaks and a row of idle mowers.

It had two bedrooms, a screened porch and a kitchen with a window facing the barn.

There was a golf trophy on top of the fridge that someone had used as a coaster.

Bryn made grilled cheese with the hot pan and the wrong bread, and Poppy ate half of hers and wore the rest.
