Chapter 15: The Bank

Sullivan called me at ten past ten, and I had my keys in my hand before he finished the sentence.

"She's in the office with a pot of coffee," he said. "She's mostly sober. She says she won't talk to anyone but you."

"Is she going to run?"

"I took her other shoe."

I told June I was going to Linden Court, and she said, "Take the folder," and went back to sleep on her arms.

I left the folder.

I did not want that building to see it.

Paula sat in the leather chair behind Sullivan's desk with her hair in her face.

The cardboard box stood on the floor by her feet.

Sullivan leaned against the wall by the door with his arms crossed, which told me he would be there the whole time.

"Thank you for coming," Paula said.

"Don't."

"All right."

"What's in the box?"

She pushed it toward me with her stockinged foot.

Inside were two of Calvin's dress shirts, a razor, a pair of cuff links I had bought him for our tenth anniversary, and a laptop in a gray sleeve.

"That's his second laptop," she said. "He kept it in my closet. He thought I'd never touch it."

"You touched it."

"The password is June's birthday. Of course it is."

I looked at the shirts.

I had ironed shirts like those.

"Why are you showing me this tonight?"

Paula pressed both hands against her eyes.

"Because I got the lender's letter this afternoon," she said. "Calvin put the house in my name, Sonya. Not his. The loan, the earnest money, the whole contract. He said it was for tax reasons."
